As internet marketers, we have to wear two different hats. On the one hand we know that it makes perfect sense to build a buyer list and then use that list to make money. However, the other hat that we have to wear is that of a customer. In fact, most marketers are both, vendors and buyers, so we get to see both sides of the coin.
When I am wearing my customer hat, I get really pissed off with marketers who insist on me joining an “update” list before I am allowed to download the product that I have just paid for, and who then send me email after email trying to sell me something else. Can you imagine going into a store, buying something, then being told that they cannot let you have your purchase until you have handed over your name and email address? No, me neither. It would be ridiculous.
One of the most valuable assets you can have as a marketer is your list of buyer emails. Treat that list with respect. Sending too many sales emails will eventually have only one result – unsubscription. Respect the list and they will buy from you time and time again, not unsubscribe after a couple of weeks.
OK, I’ll get off the soapbox now
